Negotiating the algorithm: Artificial intelligence and algorithmic management at work

Artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithmic management systems are increasingly used in recruitment, performance evaluation and work discipline. Their use in the world of work has important implications on the quality of existing jobs and working conditions, including on fundamental rights. This talk will address some of these issues and reflect on how collective bargaining and social dialogue can be used to address some of the concerns.

Valerio De Stefano is a professor of law and Canada Research Chair in Innovation, Law and Society at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Toronto. He holds a PhD in Law from Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. Until 2022, he was a professor of labour law at the KU Leuven and, previously, an officer of the ILO. He has published extensively on artificial intelligence and management by algorithms in the world of work, digital labour platforms and international labour standards . His most recent book is “Your Boss is an Algorithm: Artificial Intelligence, Platform Work, and Labour” (Hart, 2022, with Antonio Aloisi).

Janine Berg is Senior Economist in the Research Department of the International Labour Office in Geneva, Switzerland. Since joining the ILO in 2002, she has conducted research on the economic and social effects of labour regulations as well as provided technical assistance to ILO constituents on policies for generating jobs and improving working conditions. From 2008 to 2011, Janine worked at the ILO office in Brazil as an employment specialist. From 2018 to 2019, she served in the Secretariat for the ILO’s Global Commission on the Future of Work. She is the author of several books and policy reports as well as numerous articles on employment, labour market institutions and the future of work. Her current area of focus is on transformations in the world of work and regulatory compliance. Janine received her Ph.D. in economics from the New School for Social Research in New York, USA.
